When your
lip muscles start getting tired, it’s time to stop. There’s no rule that says
you HAVE to practice for a full hour straight. And definitely not if your
muscles aren’t up to the task. 30 minutes a day is fine for a beginner. Or, if
your schedule allows and you’re motivated to do so, do 2 practice sessions in a
day. 30min in the morning, 30min later in the day.
Playing an
instrument is a physical task, using muscles in a different way than you’re
accustomed to. Like any other muscle, It takes time & training to build up
endurance/stamina.
Forcing
yourself to keep going when you’ve got nothing left will just cause bad habits
to form as you try to compensate for the fact that your muscles are shot. And
can possibly cause some injuries.
PLUS -
there are TONS of things you can practice without actually playin:
•
fingerings, hand position, overall posture & note recognition by holding
the sax as if you were playing, saying the note names out loud and pressing the
corresponding keys.
(Use
scales, songs, arpeggios etc)
• Music
Theory: Memorizing scales / key signatures, chords. Talk your way through them
… (while pushing the keys)
•
Rhythm! Count along to songs or a
metronome. Count (feel) the different subdivisions.
